Combining traditional video gaming with the slots is taken to a new level with the Video Reel Edge Game Family from International Game Technology. The innovative concept debuts the industry’s only regulatory-approved skill-based slot in the market, tapping into an emerging demographic that has grown up with arcade video games.
The games play out like traditional slots during the base game, but when two or more bonus symbols land on the centre reel, players can choose from a free games bonus or skill-based bonus. The later allows players to use a physical joystick to navigate through an abandoned subway or underworld adventure, in the two existing themes.
Using the arcade-style joystick to steer their way through the bonus rounds, players control how much they win by collecting prizes, treasures and gems along the way. The bonus rounds look and feel like an arcade game, letting players experiment with different routes to determine how much can be collected. At the end of each bonus, the awards are totalled and shower credits upon the player.
“This is not a traditional slot,” commented Ron Rivera, IGT Senior VP of North American Sales, “The innovation and originality in our Reel Edge series of games is unmatched in the market. Because the bonuses are 100 percent skill-based, we’re able to offer a truly cutting-edge gaming experience.”
Presented in IGT’s unique Universal slant-top cabinet with a 23” LCD display and 32” LCD upper screen immersing players deep within each game, Video Reel Edge launched with two themes: Blood Life Legends™ and Tully’s Treasure Hunt™.
Based on its predecessor Blood Life™, the new Blood Life Legends™ features spooky wolfs, ravens and vampires in an underground supernatural adventure. The video slot is a low-volatility, 5-reel, 40-line game with 1024-ways-to-win.
In the skill-based Cave Collector bonus, players assume the roll of a bat as it flies through underground caves, sewers and subways. Motioning the joystick to collect awards, the bat finally reaches a treasure chest, with the amount of credits dependant on the route taken.
With the same play-dynamics and skill-based bonus concept, Tully’s Treasure Hunt™ take players to a contrary environment, as colourful fish, turtles and crustaceans swim around deep within the ocean. Vibrant pinks, blues and greens bring this comical adventure to life as players meet Tully the Turtle and his band of underwater friends.
“We’re pretty sure that the quality of these skill-based bonuses will convince both successful players and those needing a little more practice to play again just to hone their skills,” said Dirk Geere, IGT Director of International Product Management.
“Video games are where this industry is heading,” added Chris Satchell, IGT CTO, “We became very good at how we bring masses of content together, improving the quality of content in slot machines, the richness of content, and production values. We’re going to need all of that, because our patrons are demanding more of us.”
