Social casino games lead mobile app markets

  • Social casino games are one of the top-grossing categories in mobile gaming and in the wider mobile app market. New findings by app analyst Distimo shows social casino publishers dominate the leader boards on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

    Research conducted over a seven-day period (March 17-23) identified that 20 publishers among the top 100 in the App Store had at least one casino title in their portfolio. On an equivalent leader board for Google Play, 19 publishers included a casino game. As the theme becomes more popular with gamers, social casino games are now one of the most lucrative mobile games segments.

    Social gaming“With one-fifth of the top 100 grossing publishers who publish at least one social game,” surmised the report, “and almost one-fifth on Google Play, publishers of social casino games are a force to be reckoned with in the app stores.”

    Looking at the casino category, Caesars-owned Playtika ruled the roost over the top ten publishers, accounting for 21pc and 22pc overall market share, on the App Store and Google Play, respectively. Creator of the innovative Slotomania, Playtika games are played by more than 5 million people daily, in approximately 190 countries. Big Fish Games, with its wide portfolio of social titles, came in second with 16pc (App Store) and 9pc (Google Play) share of the total revenue.

    Next was Zynga with a 12pc and 9pc share of the casino category on the App Store and Google Play, respectively. IGT’s DoubleDown Casino came next with 11pc and 9pc share. The social casino has grown from strength-to-strength since being acquired by IGT, as the gaming titan adds proven casino content to the social environment and converges marketing with land-based and online.

    The remaining top ten publishers consisted of Bash Gaming, with its Slots Bash and Bingo Bash titles (8pc and 8pc); GSN Games, with popular titles such as Bejeweled, Solitaire Rush and Vegas nights (8pc and 8pc); Buffalo Studies, creator of Bingo Blitz (6pc and 11pc); Williams Interactive, the WMS affiliate owned by Scientific Games (6pc and 10pc); Cervo Media, casual developer that found success with Pharaoh’s Way slot (7pc and 7pc); and Dragonplay, creator of Live Hold’em Pro, the leading poker game on Google Play (0pc and 9pc).
